Privacy Policy
The Speedometer app (hereinafter "the App") respects the privacy of its users.
Data Collection
The App uses your device's GPS location to calculate speed, distance, and other driving statistics. Measurement data (speeds, distances, routes) is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to our or anyone else's server. Downloading map and marine data from the network is described under "Third Parties".
Stored Data
The App stores the following data locally on your device:
- App settings (theme, unit, display style, etc.)
- Trip history (start/end times, distances, speeds, routes)
- A cache of waterway speed limit areas (Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency open data)
You can delete all stored data at any time by uninstalling the App or clearing the App's data from your device settings.
Permissions
The App requests the following permissions:
- Location (GPS): To measure speed and distance in real-time. This app collects location data to enable speed tracking and navigation features even when the app is closed or not in use. Location tracking continues while a trip is active to provide continuous speed monitoring.
- Foreground Service: To maintain GPS tracking while the app runs in the background during an active trip
- Notifications: To display a persistent notification showing that location tracking is active
- Internet: To download maps and marine data (nautical charts, speed limit areas), check for updates, and fetch the privacy policy/terms from the web
How Location is Used
When you start a trip, the app:
- Continuously tracks your location via GPS
- Displays a persistent notification to inform you that tracking is active
- Calculates speed, distance, and other metrics in real-time
- Continues tracking even when you switch to another app or lock your screen
You can stop location tracking at any time by:
- Tapping "Stop Trip" in the app
- Tapping the stop action in the notification
- Closing the app completely
Third Parties
When you use the map and boating features, the App downloads data from the following providers:
- OpenStreetMap (base map)
- Traficom (nautical chart data)
- Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency / Väylävirasto (fairway and speed limit data)
These download requests expose your device's IP address and the bounding box of the map area being viewed, which may correspond to your approximate location. The App does not send these services your name, exact GPS position, routes, or any other data. The providers' own privacy policies apply to data they process. Marine data is not downloaded outside Finland.
Premium subscriptions are processed by Google Play. The App never sees or stores your payment details.
The App contains no ads or analytics tools and does not share your measurement data with third parties.
Changes to Privacy Policy
We reserve the right to update this privacy policy. Changes will be communicated through app updates.
